Hi there Fellow Street Art Enthusiasts and Welcome to StreetArtOrama!
Allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Alex
I was born and bred in Berlin at a time when the city was home to the largest continuous canvas in the world: the Berlin Wall. What I saw on there as a kid deeply ingrained itself into my subconscious but it wasn’t until the late noughties that the fascination made its way into my consciousness and
I fell in love with street art.
I still vividly remember the defining moment. It was one of those grey, rainy summer days. Slightly irritated by the weather, I was walking down Friedrichstrasse, hunched under my umbrella, scanning the wet pavement thoroughly for potential puddles. Suddenly the following words - written in big, bold, block capitals - appeared beneath my feet:
DAS IST DOCH KEIN WETTER!
Roughly translated as “THIS IS REALLY CRAP WEATHER!”, the message brought an instant, immense smile to my face. Someone else out there could relate, and for a second, the world felt a little less anonymous.
From that moment on, I began looking for more hidden messages on pavements, walls or down narrow alleys, gradually discovering the colourful world of street art. You could also say, I went down that rabbit hole and became what is colloquially known as a street art hunter: Someone who is rather attentive to its surroundings, always on the lookout for street art and ready to capture it with a camera anytime.
How does Hong Kong fit into the picture?
Easily explained.
My newly discovered fascination for street art, coincided almost simultaneously with a change in careers. After years of being sedentary - first in university halls studying for a humanities degree and then working in the office of an independent film distribution company - I started life as a flight attendant.
That job allowed me to go street art hunting all around the globe. From the Americas to Asia and all across Europe, I thoroughly enjoyed the hunt until 2017 when I decided to settle in HONG KONG to be with my hubby for more than just a couple of months out of the year (in case you are wondering, no, we did not meet onboard of a plane but during a night of swing dancing in Hong Kong).
Just because I settled in Hong Kong didn’t mean my passion for street art did too, quite the opposite. Having observed and regularly photographed Hong Kong’s street art scene since I first set foot in the city in 2010, permanently living in town only aroused more curiosity about the ARTISTS, their STORIES and CREATIONS.
By 2017, Hong Kong had grown a small but active street art scene with many creative and talented artists.
However, that scene was hardly noticed or known outside of Hong Kong, an unfortunate trait that the local scene shared with many street art scenes all across Asia.
Was there maybe anything that I could do to help the visibility of the local scene, even a little?
I have been trying by running street art walking tours - initiated and curated the official festival tours for HKwalls along the way - and focusing my (admittedly rare) blog posts on just street art. My former travel blog BerlinHongKong became StreetArtOrama, with a focus on street art, aiming to provide a panOrama on street art in Hong Kong and Asia.
However, I also wanted to create a more permanent testament to the scene. I wanted to do it old school and with that, my passion project of a book on Hong Kong street art was born. What started with my first recorded artist interview in late 2018 now finally comes to fruition as “COLOURFUL HONG KONG - STREET ART STORIES” in late October 2025.
Let StreetArtOrama introduce you to some cool art and fascinating stories about street art and its creators in Hong Kong and Asia.
